Weed Mat vs Landscape Fabric: Are They the Same Thing?
Search for ground cover online and you will meet four names for what looks like one product: weed mat, landscape fabric, weed membrane, ground cover. Sometimes they are the same thing. Sometimes they are not — and the difference decides whether your purchase lasts five seasons or one. Here is the honest breakdown, in terms you can actually check before buying.
The short answer
Weed mat and landscape fabric are the same category of product — woven polypropylene sheets that block light, let water through, and suppress weeds. In India, "weed mat" and "ground cover" are the common trade names; "landscape fabric" is the term imported from US gardening content; "weed membrane" is the British version. The confusion is real, though, because products sold under these same names vary hugely in quality. The name on the listing tells you less than the GSM and weave do.
What actually separates good ground cover from bad
1. Woven vs non-woven construction
This is the distinction that matters most. Woven fabric is made from tapes woven like cloth — strong, tear-resistant, water-permeable along the weave. Non-woven fabric is pressed fibres, felt-like. Non-woven geotextile is designed for drainage and separation under soil or gravel — it is not built for foot traffic or open sun, and as weed control it degrades fast. Some marketplace listings quietly sell non-woven fabric as "landscape fabric." Ask which one you are buying. Everything we sell as a weed mat — including the 100 GSM roll and 120 GSM roll — is woven polypropylene.
2. GSM weight
GSM decides lifespan. Under 80 GSM is decorative use. 100 GSM is the all-purpose standard for gardens, nurseries and farm beds — 3 to 5 seasons outdoors. 120 GSM is the heavy-duty grade for high-UV zones and traffic. The difference in price per square metre is small compared to the difference in life; our price-per-sqm guide shows the exact numbers.
3. UV stabilisation
A woven fabric without UV stabiliser is a tarpaulin waiting to crack. Proper weed mats are UV-treated through the tape, not sprayed on. This is why cheap imports fail in one Indian summer while a quality mat fades in colour but keeps its strength for years.
4. Permeability
Weed control fabric must pass water. That is what separates it from plastic sheeting — roots stay hydrated, soil biology keeps working, and rain does not pool on your beds. If a product's description mentions "waterproof," it is not a weed mat; it is plastic sheeting, and it will suffocate your soil. We have compared the two directly in weed mat vs plastic sheet vs mulch.
Which name should you actually shop by?
Ignore the name; shop by specification. Whatever the listing calls it, check four things: woven polypropylene, 100+ GSM, UV stabilised, water permeable. Any product passing those four checks will do the job regardless of whether the label says weed mat or landscape fabric. Any product failing even one of them will disappoint, whatever premium name it carries.
Where the terms genuinely differ in practice
- Weed mat / ground cover: Trade standard in Indian agriculture — usually means woven, GSM-rated, sold in rolls of 1x100 m or as ready mats. What nurseries and polyhouses buy.
- Landscape fabric: Same product class, but the phrase appears mostly on imported-style listings — quality ranges from excellent to non-woven disguise, so verify the spec sheet.
- Weed membrane: UK term, same category. Often associated with under-gravel use in driveways and paths — a perfectly good use for a quality woven mat, covered in our gravel pathway guide.
- Geotextile: A broader engineering category. Woven geotextile at 100+ GSM is essentially the same fabric; non-woven geotextile is for drainage layers, not weed control.
A quick buying test anyone can do
If you already bought fabric and are unsure what you got: pull a corner hard. Woven fabric resists and makes a slight crackling sound; non-woven felt stretches and fuzzes. Hold a section to the sun — quality woven mat shows a consistent tight weave with no thin gaps. Pour water on it — it should soak through in seconds, not bead up. Fail any of these and you have decorative fabric, not ground cover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is landscape fabric the same as weed mat?
Yes, when both are woven UV-treated polypropylene. The names describe the same product category. Verify GSM and weave rather than trusting the label wording.
Can I use non-woven geotextile as weed mat?
Not recommended for open use. Non-woven fabric is for drainage layers under soil or gravel. Under sunlight and foot traffic it breaks down and clogs within a season or two.
What GSM landscape fabric should I buy in India?
100 GSM covers gardens, nurseries and farm beds. Choose 120 GSM for high-UV regions and heavy traffic. Below 90 GSM, expect one to two seasons maximum outdoors.
Does landscape fabric let water through?
Quality woven weed mat does — water passes along the weave in seconds. Waterproof products marketed as ground cover are plastic sheeting and will harm soil health.
