Weed Mat Price per Square Metre in India: 2026 Cost Maths

Comparing weed mat prices by looking at the sticker on the roll is how people overpay. A ₹2,200 roll can be double the per-metre cost of a ₹6,999 roll. The only number that lets you compare honestly is price per square metre — and once you know how to work it out, weed mat pricing in India becomes surprisingly transparent. Here is the full 2026 maths, with real examples for gardens, nurseries and farms.

Current per-square-metre prices (2026)

  • Ready garden mat 1.2x1.2 m, 100–120 GSM: ₹150–₹350 per piece, which works out to roughly ₹104–₹243 per sq m. Our ready garden mat sits at ₹299 — ₹207 per sq m including the stitched edges.
  • 100 GSM roll, 1x100 m: ₹6,500–₹9,000 across Indian sellers, covering about 100 sq m. That is ₹65–₹90 per sq m. Our 100 GSM roll works out to ₹70 per sq m.
  • 120 GSM roll, 1x100 m: ₹7,500–₹11,000, again ~100 sq m, so ₹75–₹110 per sq m. The extra ₹5–₹20 per sq m buys roughly 30–40% more life in direct sun.
  • Round basin mat 1.2 m with chain: ₹200–₹450 per piece for about 1.13 sq m of cover — ₹177–₹398 per sq m. Our round chain mat is ₹399, and the chain edge is doing real work here, holding the shape around tree basins.

Notice the pattern: rolls are the cheapest fabric per square metre; ready mats cost more but need no cutting or pinning. Neither is wrong — they solve different problems.

How to calculate the cost for your own project

Take out a tape measure or pace out the plot. Multiply length by width of the area you want covered. Add 7–10% extra for overlaps if you are using a roll — seams need about 15 cm overlap, and garden beds are rarely perfect rectangles. Then multiply by the per-sqm rate.

Worked example: a 30x4 m nursery strip is 120 sq m. With 8% overlap allowance you need coverage for 130 sq m. At ₹70 per sq m, that is ₹9,100 of 100 GSM roll — or one full roll plus a small offcut piece. The same area in ready mats would cost ₹24,800 or more. For any area above roughly 40 sq m, a roll is usually the better buy.

What pushes the price up or down

GSM grade

This is the biggest lever. The jump from 100 to 120 GSM adds ₹5–₹20 per sq m, but extends outdoor life meaningfully in high-UV zones. If your mat will sit under gravel, inside a polyhouse, or anywhere shaded, 100 GSM already lasts years. Open farms in Gujarat, Rajasthan or Tamil Nadu sun benefit from 120 GSM.

Quantity

Manufacturers price slabs: single rolls, 5+ rolls, pallet quantities. If a nursery or farm co-op is ordering 10+ rolls, asking for a slab rate is normal and usually gets 5–10% off. There is no harm in asking for a GST invoice at the same time — you want both.

Woven vs non-woven

Woven polypropylene (what proper weed control mats are made of) costs more per metre than non-woven fabric but handles foot traffic and lets water through. Non-woven geotextile is for drainage layers, not for weed control under sunlight. If a quote looks too cheap, check which one you are actually being sold.

Per-sqm cost vs what it replaces

Weeding cost is where the maths gets interesting. Manual weeding on a maintained garden bed runs ₹1–₹2 per sq m per visit, and in monsoon you might need 8–12 visits a season. On 100 sq m, that is ₹800–₹2,400 every season, every year, plus the labour headache of finding people. A ₹7,000 roll covering the same 100 sq m lasts 4–5 seasons. Even before you count the healthier plants and cleaner paths, the fabric pays for itself by season two. Our detailed comparison of weed mat versus plastic sheet and mulch adds the full picture including lifespan differences.

Common pricing traps to avoid

  • The tiny-roll trap: "Only ₹1,800!" — for a 1x20 m roll that covers 20 sq m. That is ₹90 per sq m at thin GSM. Check area first, price second.
  • The no-GSM trap: If the listing hides GSM, assume it is below 90. Under-spec fabric fades fast and tears at the pins within one season.
  • The shipping surprise: Roll weight of 8–10 kg means freight matters. Confirm the delivered price to your pin code, not just the listing price.
  • The wrong-product trap: Tarpaulin and pond liner are sometimes sold as ground cover. They block water — roots suffocate and rainwater pools. Real weed mat is perforated woven fabric.

Quick answers for budget planning

What is the cheapest weed mat price per sq m in 2026?

Bulk 100 GSM rolls from direct sellers work out to ₹60–₹70 per sq m delivered. Below that range, check GSM and UV treatment before paying.

How much weed mat do I need for 1000 sq ft?

1000 sq ft is about 93 sq m. One 1x100 m roll covers it with overlap margin. Budget ₹7,000–₹8,000 for 100 GSM including delivery.

Is a more expensive weed mat actually better value?

Usually yes when it is higher GSM. A 120 GSM roll costing 15% more typically lasts 30–40% longer outdoors. Price per season matters more than price per roll.

Do ready mats ever beat rolls on cost?

For small areas under 30–40 sq m, yes. No cutting waste, no pin purchase, and you can lay one mat per bed in minutes. Above that area, rolls win clearly.
