Weed Mat Size Guide: Which Size Should You Buy? (Mat vs Roll vs Round)
The single most common question we get on WhatsApp before an order is not about price — it is about size. People see a ready mat, a 100 metre roll and a round mat on our store and are not sure which one actually fits their space. Buying the wrong size is the main reason weed mats get returned or sit unused in a store room. This guide fixes that in five minutes.
The quick chooser
- Home garden beds, terrace boxes, small patches: Ready garden mat 1.2x1.2 m — covers about 1.4 sq. m per piece, no cutting needed, edges already stitched.
- Whole garden rows, nurseries, orchard basins, farm paths: 100 GSM roll 1x100 m — covers up to 100 sq. m, cut it to any shape with ordinary scissors.
- Heavy foot traffic, trolley paths, polyhouses, 5+ year use: 120 GSM roll 1x100 m — same coverage, thicker fabric, longer life.
- Individual pots, plant basins, fruit tree collars: Round mat 1.2 m with chain — slips around a trunk or basin and ties shut, no measuring.
When the ready 1.2x1.2 m mat is the right call
The ready mat exists for one reason: convenience. If your growing area is made of small, squarish beds — a terrace garden, a backyard with 3–4 vegetable patches, a school garden — you can lay one mat per bed and be done in minutes. There is nothing to cut and nothing to fold. Each mat covers roughly 1.2 by 1.2 metres, and most customers use two to six pieces. The stitched edges also stop fraying, which matters when the mat sits in an open terrace where wind and sun work on it every day.
If your beds are larger than 1.2 m on any side, do not buy three ready mats and try to butt them together. Overlapping multiple ready mats wastes money and leaves weed-prone seams. That is a roll job.
When you need the 1x100 m roll
One roll covers up to 100 square metres if laid full width. In practice, most gardeners cut it into strips: a 1 m wide path 20 m long, four rows of 5 m each, or a mix of both. Because the roll is woven polypropylene, cut edges stay stable — a small fray at the cut is normal and does not spread the way torn plastic sheet does.
A simple way to estimate: measure the length and width of each area in metres, multiply, add 10% for overlaps and awkward corners, and round up. A 3 m x 8 m kitchen garden is about 24 sq. m — a single 100 GSM roll covers it with leftover material for paths. For vegetable rows spaced 60 cm apart, one roll laid as strips can cover well over 100 running metres of row.
100 GSM or 120 GSM?
Both rolls block sunlight and stop weeds equally well — the difference is durability under use. 100 GSM is the right choice where the mat lies undisturbed: garden beds, nursery floors, under mulch. 120 GSM earns its price when people or equipment cross the mat daily — polyhouse walkways, farm paths where trolleys roll, orchard basins where you stand while picking. Under that kind of traffic, 100 GSM may need replacing in 2–3 seasons while 120 GSM holds for 5 or more. Our 2026 price guide breaks down what each costs per square metre.
Where the round chain mat wins
The round 1.2 m mat with chain is the most overlooked product on our store, and the most useful once you understand it. It wraps around a tree trunk or a plant basin and ties shut with the built-in chain edge. Nurseries use it under sapling bags so weeds cannot climb the bag. Home gardeners put it around mango, guava and lemon trunks so the trimmer never touches bark. Potted plant owners cut a slit from edge to centre and slide it over the pot base. One mat serves all three jobs.
Common size mistakes to avoid
- Buying one big roll for scattered pots — round mats or ready mats are cheaper and faster for that job.
- Underestimating overlap: always add 10% to your area calculation.
- Ignoring access: if you need to walk the bed daily, take 120 GSM, not 100.
- Forgetting pins: a roll without proper fixing lifts at the edges within weeks.
