How to Check Weed Mat Quality (GSM Test) Before You Buy Online

Every weed mat listing online says the same words: UV stabilised, heavy duty, premium quality. None of it helps you compare. What actually separates a mat that lasts five seasons from one that shreds in two is measurable — and three of the tests take less than five minutes at home. Here is what to check, in the order we would check it, whether you buy from us or anyone else.

First, what GSM really means (and what it does not)

GSM is grams per square metre — the fabric's weight density. For woven polypropylene weed mat, 90–100 GSM is the standard garden grade and 120–130 GSM is the heavy-duty grade. Higher GSM means more material per square metre, which usually means longer life under foot traffic and sun. But two catches: cheap listings sometimes quote the GSM of a different product entirely, and GSM says nothing about UV treatment, which is the spec that actually decides lifespan outdoors. A 100 GSM mat with proper UV stabilisation outlasts a 120 GSM mat without it. So check both, and ask the seller directly if the listing hides either number. Our 100 GSM roll and 120 GSM roll both state weight and UV treatment on the product page for exactly this reason.

Check 1: the rip test (on a corner scrap)

Cut a 2 cm strip from an offcut and try to tear it lengthwise along the weave. Woven PP fabric resists tearing along the threads — a good mat tears with clear resistance and a ragged, fibrous edge. A recycled or under-weight fabric tears with a crisp, almost plastic rip and little resistance. This is the fastest tell of material honesty. Do it once on any new batch you receive; you do not need to sacrifice a running metre.

Check 2: the light test

Hold the fabric up to the sun or a tube light. You should see no pinpoints of light through the weave. Pinholes mean the weave is loose — weeds find those points within weeks, especially nut-grass, which is patient and determined. Our comparison with landscape fabric shows why woven construction matters here: a properly woven mat blocks light at 100 GSM; a thin non-woven sheet needs more weight to do the same job.

Check 3: the weigh test

Cut a known area — say 50 cm x 50 cm (0.25 sq. m) — and weigh it on a kitchen scale. Multiply by 4. If the result is close to the claimed GSM (within 5–8%), the seller quoted honestly. A 100 GSM claim that weighs out at 75 GSM is a 25% overcharge, not a rounding difference. Nobody enjoys doing maths after a delivery, but it takes two minutes and settles every argument about "it felt thinner than advertised."

The two checks most buyers skip

  • UV claim in writing. Ask: "Is this UV stabilised for outdoor use, roughly how many seasons?" A seller who answers in specific years has sourced properly; a seller who answers "best quality sir" has not. Screenshot the reply.
  • Width honesty. A "1 metre" roll that measures 95 cm shortchanges every calculation. Measure the roll width on arrival with a tape; honest suppliers are consistently at or slightly over the stated width.

What a good mat feels like on day one

Before any test, handle it. Quality woven PP has a slight stiffness and a dry, fabric-like texture — it should feel like a canvas. A slippery, drapey, plastic-feeling sheet is either low GSM or laminated wrongly. Edges should be cleanly woven, not melted shut. The ready garden mat should additionally have stitched or securely finished edges, since the edge is where cheap mats fail first.

If something is wrong

Do the checks within a day of delivery, while the return window is alive. Photograph the rip test and the scale reading. A straight seller replaces without argument; a slippery one negotiates when shown evidence. And if you are comparing two sellers before buying, ask both the same three questions — GSM, UV years, and roll width — then compare only the written answers. Five minutes of asking is the cheapest quality control there is, and it works before you spend a rupee, which is always the better time.
