How to Install a Weed Control Mat in 7 Easy Steps
A weed mat only works as well as it is installed. A loose, flat-on-the-ground sheet will lift in the first wind; a properly pinned one stays weed-free for years. Here is the exact installation process we recommend — it takes one afternoon for a typical terrace or garden bed.
Step 1: Clear and level the ground
Pull out existing weeds and remove stones, sticks and debris. You do not need to dig deep — just make the surface reasonably flat so the fabric sits flush. For stubborn grass, a week of sunlight after clearing helps weaken regrowth.

Step 2: Lay the fabric with the right side up
Unroll the mat with the green marker lines (if present) facing up — they help you align plants. For rolls, work along the length of your bed. The 100 GSM 1x100 m roll covers long beds in one strip with no mid-joints.
Step 3: Overlap strips by 10–15 cm
If you need multiple rows, overlap adjacent strips by at least 10 cm so weeds cannot sneak through the seam. Pin the overlap every 30 cm.
Step 4: Pin the edges every 30–50 cm
Use U-shaped garden pins (or heavy stones on terraces) along all edges and every metre inside. Wind is the #1 killer of badly installed mats. Ready pieces like the 1.2x1.2 m mat with fixed edges need fewer pins.
Step 5: Cut X-slits for existing plants
For plants already in the ground, cut a small X (10–15 cm) and ease the plant through — never cut big holes; small slits heal into the fabric better and leave less exposed soil.
Step 6: Cover with mulch or gravel (optional but best)
A 2–3 cm layer of gravel, wood chips or coco chips on top hides the fabric, slows UV wear and makes the area look finished. This one step can add 1–2 seasons to mat life.

Step 7: Water and check weekly
Water as normal — woven fabric lets water straight through to roots. Once a month, check that edges are still pinned, especially before and after monsoon storms.
Special case: plant basins and pots
For orchard basins and large pots, skip cutting slits entirely — use a round 1.2 m mat with an open-close chain that wraps around the stem and zips shut. Takes 2 minutes per plant.
FAQ
Which side of the weed mat goes up?
If one side is smoother/shinier, keep that up — it sheds water and dirt. Otherwise both sides work.
Can I install it on a terrace floor?
Yes — use stones or pins on the corners; the fabric also protects tiles from pot stains and root marks.
How long does installation take?
A 1.2x1.2 m ready mat: 5 minutes. A full 100 m roll bed: 2–3 hours with two people.
