How to Check If an Online Store Is Genuine: 7 Quick Checks

A customer messaged us last month: "maine pehle ek site se order kiya tha, paisa gaya, saaman kabhi nahi aaya. Ab naya store dekhu toh kaise pata karu ki genuine hai?" It is the right question, and honestly, the answer is not complicated. Fake stores copy photos and prices but they almost never fake the boring details well. Here are the seven checks we tell every buyer to run — on us, on any store, on every first order.

1. Contact details that lead to a real human

A genuine store wants you to reach them. Look for a phone number or WhatsApp number, not just a contact form. Then do what scammers hate: message it. Ask a simple pre-sale question — "will this reach my pincode by Friday?" A real store answers within hours with specifics; a fake one either ignores you or replies with copy-paste enthusiasm. Every product page on a proper store carries a reachable number precisely because buyers test this.

2. Prices that make you suspicious, not happy

The classic scam signature is a ₹4,000 product listed at ₹499 with "90% off". Real stores have real cost structures — our ₹249 jewellery sets and ₹6,999 weed mat rolls sit where our actual costs put them, because we intend to still be here next year. If a discount would bankrupt the seller, the discount is the product. This does not mean genuine stores never discount — festive sales are real — but discounts stay in sane bands.

3. A payment page that behaves like a payment page

Before paying, check where you actually land. Genuine stores route through standard gateways — UPI apps, card pages with bank logos, Razorpay-style interfaces. Two red flags: being asked to send money to a personal UPI ID over WhatsApp chat with no order confirmation, and "scan and pay" screenshots instead of a checkout page. (Small stores sometimes do show a QR at checkout — the difference is that a genuine one generates an order confirmation with an order number right after. If you pay and get nothing in writing, stop.)

4. Reviews with texture, not praise

Fake reviews say "best product, highly recommended" twenty times. Real reviews mention small friction: "took 5 days to reach Jaipur but product is good", "packaging was simple, quality better than expected". Texture — delays, packing, city names, usage details — is what fake review farms never bother to write. On small stores with few reviews, check whether the reviews reference specific products at all.

5. Content depth beyond the product grid

Scam stores build exactly one page: the checkout. Genuine stores accumulate content over months — guides, care articles, size charts, FAQ pages — because real customers keep asking real questions. A store with a blog that answers things like how to install a weed mat or how to care for artificial jewellery has clearly been selling and listening for a while. Content is the one thing money cannot shortcut.

Real stores show their own product photos, their own angles, their own flaws.

6. Photos that belong to the store

Reverse-image-search one product photo. If the same picture appears on ten different sites with different brand names, you are looking at stolen listings. Genuine stores photograph their own stock — angles are consistent, backgrounds repeat, and the occasional imperfect photo is actually a good sign. Perfection across every listing is the scammer's aesthetic; a slightly crooked real photo belongs to a person who was busy packing orders.

7. The return policy that exists in writing

Every genuine store has a policy page that names what happens when things go wrong: replacement windows, damage-in-transit steps, who pays return shipping. Fake stores have either nothing or a wall of legal text that promises nothing. Read one paragraph of the policy before your first order — it tells you how the store thinks about you after your money arrives, which is the only part that matters.

Run all seven in five minutes

Check the contact, probe the price, glance at the payment flow, scan review texture, look for real content, verify one photo, read one policy paragraph. Five minutes, and you will catch the overwhelming majority of fake stores before they catch you. Then start small: a ₹249 order tells you more about a store than any review section ever will. How a store handles that small order — packing, speed, the follow-up — is the real certificate, and it is why we would rather earn ten small first-orders than one big suspicious one.

Buyer FAQs

What is the fastest way to spot a fake online store?

The price-to-reality gap. A genuine store's prices sit within normal market bands; a fake store's discount would mean selling at a loss forever. Combine that with an unreachable contact number and you have your answer in two checks.

Is paying by UPI to a store's QR code safe?

Yes, when the QR belongs to the store's business account and you receive an order confirmation with an order number. The unsafe version is a personal UPI ID shared over chat with nothing in writing afterwards. When in doubt, ask for the order confirmation before paying, not after.

Do small stores without many reviews deserve trust?

Often yes — every established store started with zero reviews. Judge them on the other six checks: reachable contact, sane prices, real content, own photos, written policy. Then make your first order a small one and let the experience speak.

What should I do if I already paid a fake store?

Act the same day: raise a dispute with your bank or UPI app with screenshots of the listing and payment, report the site to the cybercrime portal, and warn the payment provider. Recovery is not guaranteed but early disputes succeed far more often than late ones.

How can I check a store's GST details?

Ask for a GST invoice on your order before paying — genuine stores provide one on request without hesitation, and the GSTIN on it can be verified on the government portal in a minute. A store that dodges an invoice request is telling you something important.
